Mages Untangled

Sean didn’t wake the next morning as planned; in fact, he didn’t stir until late the following morning. He didn’t realize that he’d missed a day until he had made his way down the stairs in search of something to eat. In fact, he didn’t even begin to suspect until he saw Jenny and Armelle chatting away; Larry was looking on not too far away with an easy smile on his face. “Hey guys,” he said, by way of an informal greeting. “What’s for breakfast?”

“Breakfast,” said Larry, with an ear-to-ear grin now. “Which one? Yesterday we had deer steaks, poached eggs, and hash browns…I think. Well, that’s close enough. Today, we had some kind of diced sausages in our eggs and the biscuits were made out of clouds, I swear. You really missed something. I mean, Mattie is a great cook, all things considered, but real kitchen food… It’s just awesome.”

By now, both Jenny and Armelle were grinning. Jenny was just short of snickering, but Armelle’s was tinged with sympathy. “Are you telling me that I’m missing an entire day?” asked Sean. All the plans, such that they were, for the day after his arrival were grinding their way into some sort of new order in his still-foggy brain. He scrubbed his face with his hands then forced his fingers through his uncombed hair in the hopes that it would squeeze his brain into action in an effort to catch up. With his fingers still locked in his hair, he said, “Oh god, let’s see—um—Ferris, there’s been a slight delay.”

“I figured as much. You felt a bit more than tired when I last talked to you. You feel a lot better today. Have a cup on chamma and wake up. I’ll see you when you get here.”

“Did you know?”

“Yeah, Clayton’s been in touch.”

“Oh.” He broke the connection. He turned to the trio of spectators. “Does Cordan know too?”

All three of them nodded, still grinning.

Sean dropped his hands and strode off toward the kitchen. I don’t have time for this kind of bullshit. Why can’t I make anyone understand? Maybe I’ll just leave everyone where they are and finish it all by myself; I only have four more districts to go.

Fernand and his staff began to hover and fawn, but after a growl for something to eat and a few glares, they left him alone.

Armelle came in and rubbed his shoulders and back. “You were so very tired, you know.”

“I know. You did right, I suppose. It’s just that I’ve been pushing to go faster, and the harder I push, the more things come up to slow me down.”

“Why are you in such a hurry? I don’t understand what deadline you’re trying to beat.”

“I haven’t figured out what I’m supposed to meet either, but everything in me tells me to hurry up. For some very important reason, I need every ruihano and ruihana to have their attention focused on me before it’s too late. Before… Before…I don’t know what, but I just need it to happen.
